Spontaneous locomotor activity in the home cage can be measured using infrared light-beam. Alternatively, the InfraMot infrared heat sensor attached to the cage lid can be used for activity monitoring. With the light-beam frames various parameters of the locomotor activity of the animals are determined. Beam breaks are divided into ambulatory and fine movements; a refractory period can be defined to avoid scratching or tail flipping being counted.
