Lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4) hollow microspheres have been synthesized by using MnCO3 precursor as a self-template. The microstructure of the hollow microspheres is characterized by X-ray diffraction and environmental scanning electron microscopy. The electrochemical performance of the samples is evaluated by cyclic voltammetry and charge-discharge cycling tests. LiMn2O4 hollow microspheres deliver excellent cycling stability and rate capability. The initial discharge capacity is 61.5 mAhg-1 tested at a rate of 20C. The capacity retention ratio is above 87% after 1200 charge-discharge cycles. The results indicate the LiMn2O4 hollow microspheres are the most promising cathode materials, which may be used in high power lithium ion batteries.
