Teeth are calcified, layered structures in the mouths of vertebrates. The main rigid constituents of the tooth are the enamel and dentin. The enamel is the hardest material in the body and dentin is harder than bone but softer than enamel. The mechanical properties of teeth are studied to learn about: its structural function in the body, the effects of pathologies in tooth mechanics and related clinical issues, development of new tooth reconstruction material and research in tooth physiology.
